I understand the point being made by Dr. Misner that not all people in the world are 'automatically' connected by "Six Degrees of Separation".

However...even Dr. Misner admits that, "... with regular training and coaching, people can develop their networking skills, increase their connections and become part of that roughly 29% of the people that are, in fact, separated from the rest of the world by only six degrees."

Wouldn't it be interesting to see the results if the "Six Degrees of Separation" excercise were performed by BNI members exclusively? My guess is that the results would be far superior than the 29% achieved by Milgram's experiment...in which case the concept of "Six Degrees of Separation" would then become a source of "Fact Mixed With Ficton" as opposed to it being simply a myth!

So is the "Six Degrees of Separation" concept really a myth?

Perhaps...unless of course, you're in that 29% group for whom "Six Degrees of Separation" is not a myth...it's their reality!

This is a great reminder to all of us not to take the notion of six degrees for notion. As I've heard Ivan say before, "it's not net-sit or net-eat ... it's net-WORK!" That implies learning, education, and training.
Networking takes WORK and ongoing commitment.

Well, six degrees is a myth... but it depends on who you are. I have to agree. As a Rotarian I probably could get a message to anyone in the world in six connections, but I understand what Dr Misner means.

We all need to work at our networking, building up relationships, etc., with our fellow BNI Members and other business and personal clients.

If we all apply what Dr Misner says we will all have "six degrees". But it won't happen without us working at it.
