Priscilla Rice:
Hello everybody and welcome back to the Official BNI Podcast, brought to you by networkingnow.com, the which is the leading site on the net for networking downloadables. I am Priscilla Rice coming from Live Oak Recording Studio in Berkeley, California. I am joined on the phone today by the Founder and Chairman of BNI, Dr. Ivan Misner, as well as Jean Heller from the Referral Masters in Clearwater, Florida. Welcome to both of you to the podcast.

Ivan Misner:
Thanks Priscilla. Hi Jean.

Jean Heller:
Hi Dr. Misner.

I understand you have been a member now for almost 2 years. Is that right?

That is correct.

And you are the Vice President of the Referral Masters chapter. Condolences. I mean, congratulations. The Vice President is the toughest of all the jobs, isn’t it?

I hope so. I hope it doesn’t get any tougher than this.

The Vice Presidents is really, I think, one of the most important roles because they really track all of the new members and maintain the quality of members. Thank you for your work as Vice President. That is a tough job. In some countries, by the way, it is called Membership Director or Membership Coordinator. In the United States and in North America, we call it Vice President.

Today we are going to be talking about a CD set that you were really excited about and you were referred to me by the publisher of this CD set, Del Fuego. Del Fuego produced this CD set called BNI Networking Secrets. They asked for you, as you have listened to this CD set and were pretty excited about it. They asked for you to do this interview with me today.

I thought maybe we would start off by just talking a little bit about this CD and what you picked up out of it. I begin the CD by talking about something that I think is really important in the education process, and that is the leaky bucket process of education, that when I trained a director, some of the information that I give them spills out or leaks out. It has holes. When they train a leadership team, more information leaks out. And when that leadership team trains somebody else, even more information leaks out. So by the time you are three or four generations down, you have a half a bucket of information. When you have that, people start putting their own stuff in.

One of the reasons that I did this CD was to help people get the information directly from me so that we would bypass these different levels. My question to you is what’s different about the BNI Networking Secrets? There is a lot of educational material that is available through BNI. What is different about BNI Networking Secrets?

There is always a lot of educational material and I think I have read all the books. I think what’s different about this is the incredible ease of listening. It’s fun, it’s informative and it’s very, very portable. I keep my copy in the car, and anytime I have to drive anywhere that is more than 20 minutes away, I put in one of the CDs and so that I can keep listening and keep listening. I have often told people that if I was told that I could keep only one piece of BNI educational material, this would be the piece because it is all there.

Thank you. I appreciate you saying that. We really try to pack a lot of information into this particular CD. By the way, for the listeners of this podcast, there will be link in this podcast for this CD set that you can go to directly and get if you are interested in doing that. What haven’t you heard before or actually, haven’t you heard most of the material that is in the CD? Haven’t you heard it before?

Yes. Absolutely. But like your leaky bucket theory of education, there is a leaky bucket theory of memory. You get away from the training, the MSP, the advance trainings and so on. You get into a routine with BNI. Some of the stuff leaks away. While you have heard it, you are not remembering it or you are not remembering it well enough to use it properly.

Right, but you have been to more extensive training to the average person. You have gone through VP training, and I understand that you have done Certified Networker training, which we are going to mention later. You have had more extensive training, wouldn’t you agree, than maybe the average member of BNI?

Unfortunately, that’s probably true. I think that every member should take full advantage of the training opportunities. I have had a lot, but that doesn’t mean — that is just more to forget.

Right. But I think there may be some material in here that maybe the average member hasn’t heard- for example, the VCP process, where I really go into detail about the visibility, creditability and profitability and how they can implement it at the chapter level. I think the average member probably as not run into that.

If in passing, perhaps in an MSP but not nearly to the depths that we here at and work with it during Certified Networker, no.

Tell me about the third CD. The first two CDs are me talking to members about some of the really key things that I think are important. They are things like the landmarks for new members, the MSP, of the One to One, the second commercials, giving good referrals — but the third CD is done by Tom Fleming. He is a great BNI director in Florida, and I know that you got a lot out of that third CD as well. Maybe you can take a couple moments and talk about the third CD.

Certified Networker is a 12 module college-level course which takes BNI training way beyond anything available anywhere else. I likened it after I took it to trying to take a sip of water from a fire hose. There is just so much that comes rushing at you all at once. In fact, Tom teaches it here. This one CD is like a micro shot.

It’s almost a mini version of the Certified Networker, isn’t it?

Yes. That is exactly what I was going to say. It is a mini version of Certified Networker. I defy anyone to listen to it and not want more. It’s very thirst-inducing. Taken together, the three CDs give you an idea of what is out there and just to put it all in perspective, there are “eureka” moments all the way through those CDs, where it’s kind of a forehead slapping moment and you say, “Oh my gosh. I remember now. I learned about that in such and so place. I forgot all about it and I haven’t used it in months. It really gets your blood moving with what you might have either forgotten or neglected.

We are going to need to wrap up here in a moment, but for anyone interested in the Certified Networker training that she was talking about, you can go to ReferralInstitute.com. That is one word for ReferralInstitute.com. Referral Institute does the Certified Networker training that she’s talking about. This CD is really a mini version of the material and its great content. I really recommend that BNI members take a look at this CD set, particularly new members, because it really lays out what I think are some of the key elements to being successful in the BNI program. Jean, before I wrap up, any last comments about the CD set?

I was going to ask if I could do that. If I had had access to this CD set as a new member, I think it would have cut anywhere from four to six months off of my learning curve and made me a much more active and valuable member of BNI both for myself and on behalf of my referral partners much more quickly. There’s more here than just for veteran members.

Thank you very much for saying that. For anyone listening to this podcast, you can go to the BNI store and there will be a link on this podcast directly to the BNI networking secrets CD set. It’s three CDs. If you want to put in the coupon code the word “podcast”, we will knock five dollars off the CD sets. Already, we have 13% off of the CD set, so it will be an additional five dollars on top of that. Just type in “podcast” under the coupon code.

Jean, thank you so much for sharing your experience with this CD set, and I highly recommend that BNI members have a chance to pick it up. It will definitely make you a better BNI number and as you said, knock six months off of your trial and effort time. Thank you very much I will turn it over to Priscilla.

Thank you for having me.

That was great. I can’t wait to get the CDs myself. You guys made it sound so inviting. Thank you Dr. Misner. I just want to say that this podcast has been brought to you by networkingnow.com, the leading site on the net for networking downloadables. Thanks for listening. This is Priscilla Rice, and we look forward to having you join us again next week for another episode of the Official BNI Podcast.

Best way to remember training material is to immediately explain it to others at the earliest opportunity within 2days. This gives you second opportunity to learn, by judging yourself as to how best you can reproduce the learning you did. You have to get back to your material text no sooner than you realize that you were not as effective as the trainer or better.
