I started in reverse.

I first started knowledge networking with people in my own profession, partly to maintain my skill sets, and partly to clock the compulsory professional development hours required by my profession.

Much later, I began business networking with people in different fields and professions.

My conclusion: you need both types of networking, no matter which one you start off with first.
