This week Dr. Misner is beginning a 12-week course of BNI Fundamentals. If you’re a BNI Education Coordinator, you can download this information from the BNI website.
Here are the top ten ways to prevent other BNI members from giving you good referrals.
- Show up late or multi-task during the meeting.
- Be absent.
- Don’t invite your own guests.
- Use other people’s 60-second presentation time to think about what to say yourself.
- Focus your efforts on selling your services to the members.
- Don’t rush following up on a member referral.
- Use one-to-one’s to talk about the chapter.
- Wing it with your 60-second presentation.
- Use your 10-minute presentation to explain minute details of how your business works.
- Air your grievances among your table-mates and guests.

Synopsis
This week Dr. Misner joins us from Bermuda with special guest Richard Swan, the composer who created the BNI Song that’s attracted so much attention in Episode 106 and on YouTube. Richard saw the value of BNI from the time one of his students introduced him to the Tower Hill chapter. His band, Cornucopia, has gotten wonderful gigs through BNI.
Many artists aren’t willing to make the commitment to BNI; they’re too focused on their art and not focused enough on their business. Many musicians are just going to bed at the time Richard gets up to go to his BNI meeting, but networking is just as important to performers and creative people as to anyone else.
The best referrals for Richard’s band are weddings and parties in the UK.

Synopsis
Dr. Misner reports from Tokyo, where he’s visiting BNI chapters with his daughter Cassie.
Today’s networking lesson comes from dry farming techniques practiced in Napa Valley vineyards. The roots have to grow very deep to reach underground water no matter the climate, just as referral marketers have to develop “deep-water relationships” in order to generate referrals no matter the economic climate.
Another story that illustrates the power of referrals is that of giant redwood trees. You might expect redwood trees to have a deep root system, but they don’t. The technique they use to remain upright is intertwining their roots with those of their neighbors. Likewise, the members of a BNI chapter can support one another in difficult economic times.

Synopsis
This is a follow-up to last week’s episode about asking for testimonials. There are three keys to using written testimonials successfully.
- Ask for written testimonials at every opportunity—but not too soon!
- Guide the content of your testimonials. The easier you make it for your client, the more likely you are to get what you need.
- Update your testimonials. Review your file or binder (or website) every two to three years at least. Discard anything from a company that’s no longer in business. Feel free to ask ongoing clients to update their testimonials if it’s appropriate.
