It also really comes down to liking what you do. If you don't, no amount of recreation or family time will fully make up for it.

In defense of the word balance, it pays to remember that life's fulcrum is not a fixed one, and hour-by-hour not everything we do has the same value. Thus I would say it is entirely possible to have balance without devoting equal time.

I found your "Be here now" comment so striking for me. I often drift to all the other things and places and people "I should" be doing. I then lose the true value of the present moment. Thanks for the reminder.

"Should be" and "Should have" are so counterproductive. Be here now makes so much sense. When you make a conscious decision to be somewhere then do it. When I take time in the middle of a business day to spend with my granddaughter do I feel bad? The answer is most definitely NO! I know when I have her working is almost impossible so knowing that I let go and I enjoy every moment. She has changed so quickly in the last year. She is a reminder that time flies and time lost can't be bought no matter the amount of money. Work will wait.

I feel that "Be here now" is what we should integrate inside us. I feel that without hard work in right direction there is no success.

You made the point that working long hours and being a workaholic are two different things, but I think there's another point that needs to be stressed. Harmony for you may be different to harmony for me. You found harmony with working long hours for days then taking time for yourself and family. Because of the life I've chosen, I find harmony on more of a daily schedule and lots of money isn't the only way to have success. You said it best when you said "but if you can find concepts that work for you to be creative on how you spend your time and how you can create harmony in your life, you’re going to feel more balanced or more in harmony with your work."
I really liked the way you explained the harmony concept! I didn't know what I was doing was called that, just that it felt right for me. Thanks Ivan!

Ivan,

This is such a perfect topic for discussion. It seems everyone is focused on that this year. I think the economic issues have thankfully brought a touch of reality to our lives and some of us including myself are taking a look at how we contributed or the lack thereof. Before hearing this podcast, I had made it my New Year's resolution, so you can imagine my smile when I heard your topic. I really the term "be there". Whether at home or at work, I sometimes find myself wandering mentally while people are talking to me. I am going to make it a point to stop that. I already have set my alarm for two hours earlier each day in order to accomplish some of the things that I haven't been able to do. I can relate to "I'm not a workaholic. I just work long hours." I believe there is a huge difference between the two.

Thank you!!

Working all night long! There is no such thing as balance, however harmony, YES! Works for me. We do all need some complete time off of working.
“Don’t do what I do; take the concept and apply it to where you’re at.” Because I used these techniques long before I had a lake house. I would find ways to be creative in the environment that I had at my fingertips. And so take these ideas and apply them to you. That’s what I did, and it’s helped me to evolve over time to be more successful.

I agree, you only get to live your life once. You may have done some things that were out of balance in the past. But you can still change your future.
