Episode 198: “You Do the Math”

Synopsis

Certified Financial Planner Dan Romero joins Dr. Misner today. Dan is part of the BNI Diamond Club in Santa Ana and has been a BNI member since 2002.

This episode is called “You do the math” because Dan estimates that he could cover 650 years of BNI dues in what he gets out of one year’s membership in BNI. His business has so far gathered $25,963,639 in assets from referrals or referrals that come from referrals.

So why are Dan and his chapter so successful?

  1. Givers gain. Taking time to get to know the other members, make introductions, and give referrals. This generates trust and puts you top of mind.
  2. Sponsoring people into the group. This guarantees a quality group and grows the chapter faster. Larger chapters generate more business.
  3. Serving on the leadership team. This creates visibility and also demonstrates reliability and trustworthiness, encouraging people to give you referrals.

Episode 197: “Mobile Phones in BNI Meetings”

Synopsis

Today’s topic is controversial: mobile phones in BNI meetings.

If you’re sitting in an important meeting with your biggest client, would you interrupt  it for a text message or phone call? Of course not. So why would you do that during a BNI meeting?

There’s no quicker way to undermine your own credibility than to pay attention to the phone and not your fellow BNI members.

“But what if my wife goes into labor?” people ask. Yes, you can make extraordinary exceptions, but in 50 years, Dr. Misner has never been in a room with someone whose wife has gone into labor during a meeting. And nothing less serious is an excuse.

So unless you have a family member about to be born or die, just turn off the phone before you go into a BNI meeting—or any other networking meeting.

Read Dr. Misner’s Business Networking blog post on this topic, and then come back and tell us your ideas for the best way to handle the cell phone plague.

Episode 196: “Three Networking Trends to Watch”

Synopsis

This week Dr. Misner wants to discuss three trends for business networking in the next 10 years:

  1. Integration of face-to-face and online networking opportunities, including niche social networks like BNI Connect.
  2. Education. More private companies will offer training in business networking, because universities won’t. Consumers need to be informed: make sure the training company is qualified.
  3. Association. So far attempts to create associations of professional networking groups have failed. They sometimes create conflicts of interest, which may be why.

Episode 195: “Plan an Xtraordinary Year”

Synopsis

Dr. Mark Goulston is back with Dr. Misner on the podcast today. (He was on Episode 127, “Get Through to Absolutely Anyone,” and Episode 128, “Turbo-Charging Your One-on-Ones.”)

This week’s topic is about planning an “Xtraordinary” year by imagining yourself in 1, 3, or 5 years and saying “Wow!”

If you applied this plan to BNI, you would imagine yourself getting referrals effortlessly, having conversations in which they could say, and you could say, “Wow, you get it! You get us! You get me!”

Think of what it is that has caused people to “Wow” you, and then do it.

Visit Dr. Goulston’s Xtraordinary Outcomes website, where he and his partner figures out how the most talented employees do what they do and help them to do it more consistently.

Episode 194: “The End Is Near”

Synopsis

This week Dr. Misner introduces the BNI Business Index, created to survey BNI members about how business is going.

  • 68% of the 5,000 respondents to the first survey say that business is growing or growing substantially.
  • The responses so far for the first quarter of 2011 indicate that about 50% of small businesses are hiring.

survey results

What the surveys don’t tell us is how businesses are growing and succeeding despite a down economy. Dr. Misner has some theories about what’s involved:

  • Attitude: refuse to participate in the recession
  • Innovation: find ways to work together with other businesses
  • Alertness: look for emerging opportunities
  • Creativity: find a new angle on your business.

Visit www.bnibusinessindex.com and take the current survey. Come back every quarter for new results and a new survey.
