Synopsis

This week Dr. Misner shares his experience of what Wayne Baker says in Achieving Success through Social Capital: people with strong networks are healthier.

When Dr. Misner was diagnosed with prostate cancer, the possible side effects of surgery and radiation scared him. He reached out to his network for help and found the Center for Advanced Medicine. By dramatically changing his diet and eliminating all processed foods, he has been able to bring about complete remission from cancer and return to health.

Dr. Misner and his wife Beth created The Misner Plan website to share their experience and help others who may be facing health challenges. Their general recommendations for everyone include:

  • Start with a detox.
  • Get a water filtration system.
  • Exercise and get outdoors.
  • Maintain a positive outlook.

Priscilla:
Hello everyone and welcome back to The Official BNI Podcast brought to you by NetworkingNow.com, which is the leading site on the net for networking downloadables. I am Priscilla Rice, and I am coming to you from Live Oak Recording Studio, in Berkeley, CA. I am joined on the phone today by the Founder and Chairman of BNI, Dr. Ivan Misner. Hello Ivan. How are you?

Ivan:
Priscilla, you ask me that question almost every time we talk. I almost always say that I am going great, but on this particular episode, it is really relevant because I am doing great. I want to talk about how that is relevant in just a moment.

I read a book several years ago by a friend of mine, Dr. Wayne Baker. The book is Success Through Social Capital. I have mentioned it probably a couple of times on my podcast.

Here is something I don’t think I have ever mentioned on the podcast. There was one thing in there that when I first read it, I went, come on, really Wayne? Really? What it was that he said that people who have a powerful personal network are healthier. I said how does that work out? As I continued to read his explanation, it made total sense to me.

He talked about the fact that if you have a powerful personal network and you have a health problem, you don’t just pick up the phone book and try to find a doctor, a physician or a specialist. You talk to your network. You talk to people who say, “I have had the exact same problem. This is what you need to do.” And you get ideas and suggestions and follow through with it.

He had some hard evidence that in fact people who had a powerful personal network were healthier. After reading that, I thought okay, that makes sense. I kind of tucked it into the back of my mind and I didn’t think a lot about it.

So today’s discussion is a little different for me, Priscilla, from any of the previous podcasts that I have done. I have been doing podcasts for many, many years and I tend not to talk about personal issues a lot. I talk more about BNI, networking, and things that will help you in your chapter. This topic today is a little broader. It is certainly more personal to me and broader to you. It is certainly something that I think may be of value to some of my listeners.

Priscilla:
That sounds great. I am looking forward to it.

Ivan:
Most people know that almost two years ago, a little over a year and a half ago, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I have been dealing with that challenge for a little over a year and a half. About a year ago, I was told that I was in remission. I bring this up because last month, I was told by the doctor that the test that I took fell within the normal range. So not only am I in remission, in remission on steroids, I came back completely in the normal range for a man my age.

That in and of itself is good news, but here is the amazing news: I didn’t have surgery. I didn’t have radiation. I didn’t do chemotherapy. All I did was change my diet and take a phytonutrient protocol, which is a plant based protocol that I participated in out of the UK. It was not chemical based, but rather plant based.

I did all of that and I am sharing this for a couple of reasons. I am sharing this because my wife and I made a commitment. We had such a great experience with what we did- it was hard work, such a great experience- that we felt obligated to give back to people who have a health situation that they might need help with.

I created a website. The website is www.misnerplan.com. We will have the link here on my podcast. I want to say right away that we are not selling anything on the website. Nothing. We are not selling stuff. We do recommend different things, but they are usually things that I have tried, my wife has tried, or we have experts who are weighing in on different things.

We are not selling anything. It is not a website to promote or sell products or services. It’s a website to say here is what happened to me. Here is what I did about it because there were very few sites that I had to deal with this, other than western medical sites that had things that were so frightening to me, absolutely frightening and went in a direction that I didn’t want to go.

There wasn’t much out there on what you can do on health and nutrition, on diet and nutrition, to turn around your health. And quite frankly, if someone would have told me two years ago that I would have a clean bill of health by just changing what I ate, I would have said you’re crazy.

Priscilla:
Okay. Now you have to tell us right away what is it that you changed?

Ivan:
Well, I changed my diet substantially and on the site, it talks about it in detail. What I changed in mine may or may not be relevant to somebody else who has a different health issue. But for the health issue that I had, I first and foremost, eliminated all processed foods. So for the last year and a half, I eat food that comes off an organic plant. Not food that is made in a plant, a building with manufacturing, processing foods. So I eat food that comes off a plant, not that comes from a plant.

I got that phrase from Dr. Mark Hieman who has written several books. He is a medical doctor who says, hey, you know- he is a master of memory hooks like “you need to go to your FARM-acy not your pharmacy.” Eating real foods helps resolve many health issues. If you would have said that to me, that that was enough to put me in remission and have me fall in normal range two years ago, I would have said you’re completely insane.

I was not a believer. However, I was frightened by the side effects of surgery and radiation. I felt like I had nothing to lose and plenty of time. If you go to misnerplan.com, there is a video that kind of explains it a little bit. The urologists are surgeons, and if all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. They all want to do surgery. I wanted to see if there was any way to avoid that and I had time to do so.

So I went this route and I figured the worst-case scenario would be I am going to be in a healthier position so if I have to do surgery, I am going to be leaner and healthier and my immune system would be better. When I first started the program, I would be lying to you if I told you that I thought it would get me in remission or get me into health. But that is exactly what I did.

So my wife and I, Beth- God bless her. She has been amazing and so supportive in this whole provess. She has created this website. She did most of the heavy lifting for the website. It is just information on how we changed what we ate.

It has to do with networking in that if you read Success Through Social Capital, he talks about it’s your network that can help you be healthier. So I am putting this very personal message to BNI members as to what I did to get healthier and what I am doing with BNI HQ and I am available to directors to get healthier.

Hopefully, some health issues that people may have- they may have the kind of results that I did, where I no longer have a serious cancer. Everyone has some cancer cells. I no longer am in jeopardy of losing my life or lifestyle from cancer. So would you like to know a couple of things that I am recommending from people?

Priscilla:
Yeah, please. Tell us.

Ivan:
The first thing I did was I went on a detox program, which we talk about on misnerplan.com. We talk about the detox program and there are a lot of good ones out there. We talk about the one that we did. It helped to begin to maximize my own health.

It’s a program that we have offered to our BNI staff. So if you have a company and you have some great success with the kinds of things that I am talking about, what I am suggesting is that owners of companies- we have a lot of business owners in BNI- consider offering that to employees. We went to our employees. We just did this a few months ago. We said, “Look, if you want to start this program-” not the same program that I am on because none of my employees had cancer- but a health program to get healthier, “start with a detox and I will buy the detox package for you.”

Now, one of the things that I learned is that people have to have skin in the game in order to be committed. So I said you pay half and I’ll pay half.

Priscilla:
Is it expensive?

Ivan:
Yeah, I think it is about $150 to do the whole detox program. It is something in that neighborhood for the particular one that I was on. So I paid half, $75 or $80. It is for eight days, I think it is. “So you pay half and I pay half. If you finish it, and here are the guidelines to having finished it- if you finish it, I will give you your check back. You pay nothing. If you don’t finish it, I am going to donate it to charity.” They wrote the checks out to our foundation.

“If you don’t finish it, it goes to charity. If you do finish it, I’ll give you your check back.” So that was the first thing we did.

Other things: install a water filtration system to your office or get bottled water that doesn’t have BPA bottles with it- but pure water, not water necessarily out of the tap. Although tap water can be fine, there are some problems with some tap waters in what is added. Try to get the staff more on water than soda and coffee. Tea, focus on tea.

Look, I drank tons of Diet Coke. I was a Diet Coke-aholic. I cut it out completely for the last two years and plan on keeping it out of my diet because of the problems with soda.

We did a detox program. Also, try to provide healthy alternatives for staff luncheons and celebrations. You know, you have a lot of processed sugars and cakes and candies and things. When you do employee events, try to have some healthy alternatives. We now strive hard to have other choices for employees than just the normal cookies and cake.

It’s really quite shocking how good some things can be that are produced with honey or agave or other kinds of natural sweeteners. You don’t have to feel- I never feel like I am not getting my share of some of the tasty things. I just have to reset my mindset as to what is tasty in what we eat.

Start a walking club. Get employees to walk on a regular basis. We have in our office a small tai chi area, and whenever Beth is in town, she leads tai chi courses. I know several of the employees walk on breaks and on lunch.

Do things like that. Try to keep morale high in the workplace. That can be a challenge, keeping morale high, but one of the things that I’ve learned is- I could never meditate. I was always troubled with meditating, but centering yourself becomes very important, especially if you have a health issue that you want to focus on.

So having high morale in the workplace and being able to focus and meditate when they have free time are ways to kind of center people.

We have done at the workplace what we call the “Daymaker Initiative”. I have a good friend, David Wagner, who wrote the book, Life Is a Daymaker, which is a moral booster. We have incorporated that into what we do.

I know we have gone over time now and I need to wrap it up, but these are some of the things that I have done for my health that I wanted to share with you, the listeners. Something personal, something amazing that has happened to me. I want to refer you to my website, miserplan.com.

We are not selling anything. It is simply an informational site that has shown how I have really changed my life. By the way, for those of you who want to drop a few pounds, I dropped 40 pounds in four months.

Priscilla:
Did you quit eating red meat?

Ivan:
Yes. Completely eliminated red meat. I am going to have my first steak in a couple of weeks in celebration to this. I may have a steak once or a few times a year at the most, but I probably ate red meat three or four times a week before. So yeah, I haven’t had one in two years. Gave up all red meat. No sugar, no gluten. No processed foods. Many, many things.

It is all right there on misnerplan.com. I invite you to go to the website. I invite you to go to our Facebook page. If you have health issues or you know people who have health issues, health can be addressed in part through your own network. If you have a power personal network, you can get ideas. I know this because I built my health plan from by network. By talking to people who led me to the Center for Advanced Medicine and the gentleman in the UK and experts like Mark Hieman who all helped me in my journey and it has all been in my network and not through the traditional medical environment.

It has made a difference in my life and I just wanted to do this podcast to help make a difference in other people’s lives.

Priscilla:
That’s great. Well, thank you, Dr. Misner. I am really looking forward to looking at the website and seeing some of the specifics of what you have done. But it is great news. Fantastic.

Ivan:
Thank you.

Priscilla:
Thanks so much for sharing that. I really appreciate it. I know the listeners are also interested and happy to hear all of that. I think that is it for this week. I would just like to remind the listeners that this podcast has been brought to you by networkingnow.com, which is the leading site on the net for networking downloadables. Thanks for listening. This is Priscilla Rice, and we hope you will join us next week for another exciting episode of The Official BNI Podcast.

Health is very important, yet thatt is the first thing we sacrifice in our rush for wealth. And when we lose it we are prepared to give up our wealth just to regain our health. I think it is important to strike a balance between our pursuit of wealth and sacrifing our health with regular workouts and medical checkups.
