Dr. Misner first discussed The Misner Plan in Episode 336, after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. At that time, he published a quick-and-dirty Kindle book called The Misner Plan. Now, he and his wife have collaborated with a professional chef and a medical doctor to create a new book called Healing Begins in the Kitchen.
So why talk about a health book on a networking podcast? Because you can’t go to meetings, you can’t get referrals, and you can’t do any business if you’re sick. If you want to be successful in business, you have to be successful in health.
Here are five changes that Dr. Misner made at work to boost his health and that of his team. You can too.
- Install a hot and cold water filtration system instead of drinking bottled water, to avoid BPAs from plastic.
- Get as many people in the office as you can engaged in a health plan of some sort.
- Always provide healthy alternatives at staff lunches and celebrations.
- Start a walking club at the office, or even a contest to see who can walk furthest in 60 days. Encourage people to bike to work.
- Do creative things to keep morale high and reduce stress.
By making these changes to his diet and exercise, Dr. Misner lost 40 pounds in 3 months. You can see before and after pictures on the Misner Plan Facebook Page.
Proceeds from the book are being donated to health research.

Hello everybody and welcome back to the Official BNI Podcast, brought to you by the Networking for Success Channel on YouTube, which features Dr. Ivan Miser and many other networking experts. I am Priscilla Rice, and I am coming to you from Live Oak Recording Studio in Berkeley, California. I am joined on the phone today by the Founder and the Chief Visionary Officer of BNI, Dr. Ivan Misner. Hello, Ivan, how are you and where are you?
Hi, Priscilla. I am home in Austin this week, sitting up in my library looking over at Lake Austin.
Today we are talking about the Misner Plan revisited. if anyone does a search on the podcast, you will see that episode 336 we did the Misner Plan. That was based on my diagnosis back in 2012 actually with prostate cancer. I just changed my diet and went into complete remission, never had to do surgery or radiation or chemotherapy. Everybody kept asking, “What did you do?”
I did a down and dirty kindle book. It was published in 2013. It’s called the Misner Plan. But we spent a few years, Priscilla, because people have asked for more information. By the way, I am still in remission. It. Has been five and a half years.
I think so too. Still in remission, haven’t had to do radiation, chemotherapy or surgery. Most of the change that I made were simple things like what I ate daily and exercise. When people really asked for me to expand on that and to have a recipe book, if you would have ever told me that I was going to write a recipe book, I would have said you’re insane because as a rule, I burn water.
So my wife is an amazing chef and we partnered up with a professional chef and a medical doctor. And we just finished a book called Healing Begins in the Kitchen. I am going to be talking to you who are listening about how this is relevant to you because I think it is relevant.
The book is called Healing Begins in the Kitchen. It just came out. It is on Amazon.com and I will put a link to where you can get it. I wrote it. Beth Misner wrote it. Eddie Esposito, the professional chef to several Presidents of the United States, as a matter of fact, and Dr. Miguel Espinoza, a medical doctor. We talk about why I did what I did. We have three quarters of the book. It’s a big book, it’s one of the biggest books that I have ever writte, 412 pages, but two thirds of it, Priscilla, are recipes, it just took a long time to compile all of the recipes. They are healthy recipes.
People hear about my diet and go, “Oh, I am so sorry for you.” But then they spend a couple of days here at my house and they are like, “Oh my gosh- you eat like this everyday?” Yeah, everyday. It is amazing, amazing food.
So let’s address the question. Why in the world is a guy who is an expert in networking talking about this book on the BNI podcast? It is really simple. You can’t go to meetings, you can’t get referrals, you can’t follow up on referrals, you can’t do business if you are sick.
You can’t do any of that. I know people talked to me five, six, seven years ago about what I was eating. I didn’t eat a lot of fast for, Priscilla, but I ate a lot of processed food. I just popped it in the microwave and I was good, I ate like that all the time. I drank a lot of Diet Coke, a lot of Diet Coke. I just didn’t eat well and for a number of reasons – there is more than one reason usually for a cancer diagnosis, but the eating was certainly a big one.
So I am suggesting to you if you are listening to this podcast, give his some thought. If you want to be successful in business you have to be successful in health. And so think about your healt. Are you overweight? Could you be a little healthier I what you are putting in your body? You know, Priscilla, I haven’t had a sick day – I used to get the flu at least once a year. At least. I haven’t had a sick day in at least four years.
That’s great, Ivan.
And I don’t get flu shots. I am not telling anybody else not to get them but I don’t need to. My immune system is as good or better than it has ever been. This is why it is really important.
I have an entire chapter in the book, Healing Begins in the Kitchen, on bringing the Misner Plan to work. Even if you aren’t a health aficionado, there are some really good suggestions in here on how to bring healthy eating into the office or workplace.
I have five things, five quick things, that I want to give you and then maybe, Priscilla, you and I can just chat. There are five changes that I made at work to boost my healthw and the health of my team.
First and foremost, I installed a hot and cold drinking water filtration system. I almost never drink out of plastic bottles anymore. You know why?
Because the plastic gives off chemicals.
Yeah, BPAs. And the plastic is not a problem as long as it doesn’t get heated and gives off the chemicals. People say, “Oh, it is in my refrigerator.” Where was it before it was in your refrigerator? It was in the store. Where was it before it went to the store? It was in a big 18 wheeler tractor trailer back in the [trailer] going through the middle of the heat. So by them either ends up in your kitchen, it already has the BPA leakage into the bottle.
So I don’t drink out of plastic. Now, there are some plastic bottles that are BPA free. They have other issues but I usually try to steer toward those but the best is a water filtration system, especially one that alkalinizes the water because the more alkaline intake you have, the more your body is in a healthier state as opposed to acidic. As you remember I. Was drinking a lot of Diet Coke, very acidic. So that was the first one.
The second one was attempt to get as many people in your office engaged in a health plan of some kind, whether it is the Misner Plan or some program. Dr, mark Hyman has some great stuff on health plans. I think one of his is the Daniel Plan. It is basically about eating healthy food, not eating processed foods. The Mormon can get an entire office to do that-
Always provide healthy alternatives is number three, provide healthy alternatives at staff parties and luncheons. You know, for the longest time, I would go down to some staff meeting. The party, you understand when there is a birthday cake, but somethings there would be a staff meeting and all there would be was pizza and sodas. maybe. A salad with creamy blue cheese dressing. You know, that salad isn’t going to help me much.
So you have to go with some alternatives. We talk about those certainly in the Misner Plan, some things that you can do. One things that I do is I always have almonds with me. Whenever I travel, if I go someplace and I can’t eat the food, I have almonds which is a really healthy, tasty, nutritious food that I can use to hold off before I eat a meal or sometimes to replace a meal.
One of the things that we did at BNI was start a walking club where we- it’s not really a club per se, but a walking program where people would hold their meeting walking around the office. Now that we are in Charlotte, there is a beautiful walk area, walkway, where people can do 1-2-1s while they are walking.
At BNI, when we were housed in LA, we did a walking contest when people would track it on a daily basis. The person who walked the furthest in, I think it was a 60 day period, got a day off. A free day off.
Oh. That’s cool.
Yeah, it was pretty cool. And then, number five, do creative things to keep morale high or boost the immune function of your team because stress canal fetch the body, no question about it. So you know, if you can do some things that are fun as a team. I once took the whole office – actually, I did it a couple of times- to laser tag. That was a blast. That was an absolute blast.
Then once or twice, I took them to Dave and Busters. I don’t know if you have that up where you are but it is basically a restaurant that has a lot of coin operated games. We spent two or three hours playing games. So if you can do those kinds of things to build up the immune system.
So hot and cold water, someone body on e healthy eating plan, get the whole office devoted to a healthy eating plan, provide healthy alternatives for lunches, start some kind of walking program and do creative things to keep the morale high. There are five things. That is our of Chapter 14 to bring the Misner Plan to work.
The name of the book is Healing Begins in the Kitchen: Get Well and Stay There with the Misner Plan.
That’s great. I can add one more thing. Ride your bike to work.
Oh yeah, great, that is really good.
Because biking is a terrific exercise and even people who are getting to be a little bit older, it is a healthy exercise for them too.
It is, you know, a lot of people like to run,but certainly, as you do get older, it is kind of hard on your knees. And so for a number of years now, I have been walking. I walk everyday. Before I get up – I work out every day but it is a light workout. It is not a crazy workout. I walk a little bit over a mile everyday. Push-ups, crunches, leg lifts, curls. It takes about a half hour. I do it everyday, and oh, by the way, changing the way I ate, I was never hungry and I dropped over 40 pounds in three months.
If you are listening, I will throw in a link also to our Facebook page. The Misner Plan. You can see a before and after pic. It is really shocking. You never know, you get used to yourself and when you see the difference, that 40 pounds is just shocking, it really is.
It’s quite a bit. I have a question for you, what about alcohol?
So, because I was eating for a cancer diet, I got off of all hard liquor 100%. I was also told no wine, no hard liquor, I drew the line at wine. Red wine has a lot of benefits. Antioxidants. There was a study done in Southern California at a retirement community. I think it was over a 50 year period. They studied people who moved into that community. It was lie a residential community, and some of them were in their 50s and lived until their 90s and 100s.
They found, interestingly enough that people who were the healthiest and lived the longest oftentimes had a drink o t two a day, so like a red wine is a very healthy wine, I drink red wine. I have a fantastic cellar. When I was going through the cancer diet, I drank less, like one glass of wine a day. Now I have red wine, wine o’clock, up in my tower everyday. Yeah, just about everyday.
So yeah, in moderation, it is okay. It’s alright. See, the problem is that the liver is working to process the alcohol and so it has a harder time creating white blood cells and it is your white blood cells that boost your immune system. So you are basically hurting your immune system if you are drinking too much alcohol, and of course, if you drink massive quantities, it obviously hurts your liver. So you want to drink in moderation.
So that is everything I have. Let me just repeat for everyone listening that you can’t get business, you can’t do business if you are not healthy. So take a few minutes and check it out. The book is called Healing Begins in the Kitchen. I know this is not the kind of book that I normally talk about but I care about my members. I care about my fired and I have started to care for the way that I care for myself a few years ago. We wanted to share that. By the way, we are donating all of the proceeds, Beth and I, all the proceeds that we get from this book are being donated to health research, eating research. This is a book that will give back to the food community. That’s all I’ve got for today.
That’s wonderful. I am so happy you shared that with us. Thank you. Well, that is it for this week. I would just like to remind the listeners that this podcast has been brought to you by the Networking for Success Channel on YouTube. Thank you so much for listening. This is Priscilla Rice and we look forward to having you join us next week for another exciting episode of the Official BNI Podcast.
