A national director recently asked Dr. Misner to talk to his members about BNI’s vision and mission.
There’s some confusion about the difference between a vision statement and a mission statement. A vision statement defines the optimal desired future state. It may or may not be possible for an organization to completely achieve its vision. The vision is aspirational.
The mission statement defines the present state or purpose of the organization, and answers three questions about why the organization exists: what does the organization do, who does it do it for, and how does it do it?
BNI’s vision statement is “Changing the way the world does business.”
BNI’s mission is “to help members increase their business through a structured, positive, and professional referral marketing program that enables them to develop long-term, meaningful relationships with quality business professionals.”
One of the reasons BNI has been as successful as it that it sticks to its mission.
Remember, developing either a vision statement or a mission statement is a process. Your business vision and mission will evolve over time, as BNI’s did.
